Still haven't got our backlog of mail. If it doesn't come today, I think I'll have to contact the post office. The only outstanding bill for this month is the mortgage and I've got that set up to be paid, so I'm not terribly worried, but it's getting close to the first of the month, and I'd like some statements to go off of, please.
Yesterday, due to shitty birthday, shitty weather and woe, I went out at lunch and bought myself birthday cupcakes and shared them with the office. I even had enough to bring home. :) The boys were pleased, as they had asked (when being taken up to my mom's house) what if I got cake while they were gone? I assured them I'd save some, which this equates to doing. Also, the cupcakes are yummy, which is a bonus.
I had my brief resurgence of fic when I got back, but now I can't seem to make words work. Of course, because of this, I have two cool sounding title-type things and nothing to go with them - "Sad as Racehorses" and "So Close to Being Gone". Oh creativity and brain, why must you vex me?
Took my car to the dealership this morning for routine maintenance and walked the mile home. It was a nice walk, though my legs sort of protested. They felt they'd done all their walking at Disneyland. Hee. Still, I'm car-less for most of the day, so all my adventures shall have to be within walking distance. Given that it looks like it's about to rain, all my adventures might take place right here on the computer.
Sigh, hey, you guys remember widget285? I miss her. |

First news and pics from The Brotherhood V: Alumni.
Despite its title, the new movie isn’t a continuation of the previous BROTHERHOOD films about male-witch covens on campus, but is rather a slasher/murder mystery DeCoteau described as “PROM NIGHT meets I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER,” scripted by Moses Rutegar. “Who killed Leslie on prom night?” he asks (not referring to Nielsen). “Was it the hunky high-school football star, his pretty girlfriend, the mean-spirited flirt, the prankster or the juvenile delinquent? Or were they all culpable?”
I don't care who killed Leslie. I'm more mystified as to why that one dead guy has candy(?) coming out of his crotch.
Oh, and this reminds me of another similarity between the movie "It Creeps!" on Degrassi High and David DeCoteau's movies. The production schedule. "It Creeps!" was filmed in a day and it seems like most of DeCoteau's movies are also filmed in a day or two. |

Five Vids You Should Watch, post-VVC recs
|
Aug. 27th, 2008 @ 11:19 pm
|
|---|
|
1. Shut Up and Drive - Laura Shapiro - I have had this recs list all ready to go for about four days now and the reason I haven't posted it is because I have been watching this vid over and over (and over) trying to figure out something to say about this vid that isn't "MARTHA WHEEEEEEE". I finally managed to have two thoughts on my (hem-teenth) rewatch: Freema is very pretty and those are some really unflattering pants she is wearing. Seriously, they over-exaggerate her hips while doing nothing to de-emphasize her waist, making her seem pear shaped instead of tiny, like she actually is.
I figured that this thought was the start of some kind of positive, analytic trend and watched the vid again. This time, all I could come up with is how expertly applied her eyeshadow is in the first scene, but I still wish they had used another color. I am officially declaring this a loss and just linking to the vid. Pretend I said something deep and meaningful about it, okay? link: http://laurashapiro.livejournal.com/240950.html
2. Handlebars - Flummery - "Is there anything the Doctor can't do?" is now a deeply troubling question. There are a few cuts that I really love in this vid. I love the introduction to all the companions. I think it is a great way to introduce the Ten. I love the cut at "I can make you want to buy a product" with the Doctor and Rose at the door is awesome. The cuts from about 2:03 to 2:12ish, that build with the instrumental part is a great transition that slowly ups the intensity of the video and really makes a nice transition. The shot of Donna in the rain is also used to great effect.
The most memorable cuts are the ones from 2:18, where the screen goes blank to the series of cuts that include the virtual model of the solar system, the tardis materializing, the shot of the planet Earth and the Doctor reaching his hand out from the doorway of the tardis. These clips go well with the music, are cut in such a way that they go together visually and have a great sense of internal movement. link: http://flummery.livejournal.com/26300.html
3. Summer Love - Talitha78 This vid is like a Lanvin garment. There is a lot of technical skill there, but it is all about the finished product. The technical skill isn't what is being shown off, it is being used to further the finished product. This vid is so clean. Every cut is so well done. The cuts build the story and compliment the music. And not only do the cuts compliment the music, but the action within the clips is also related to the music. Many of the moments in the clips themselves are on the beat. This is just, in terms of technique and musicality and the choreography/movement of the visuals, one of the most accomplished vids that I have ever seen. http://talitha78.livejournal.com/167798.html
4. Can't Tell Me Nothing - dragonchic I loved the song choice and the editing but for me, what really struck me about this vid were a couple of really well chosen images. The screw being unscrewed, the woman scratching her arm, her track marks as she walked down the street and Denzel sitting in the front of the boat and smoking a cigar. As a bonus, it brings me one vid closer to my goal of an all-Kanye VVC vidshow. http://bananainpyjamas.livejournal.com/95463.html
5. This World - Buffyann The first thing that struck me about this vid was how quiet it started out as. For me, BSG tends to lend itself more to action driven vids. But this vid starts out with a lot of stillness which I really like. It's almost like the mourning period, the quiet while you contemplate just what these characters have been through. link: http://buffyann.livejournal.com/26810.html
The usual disclaimers apply. I only watch based on my interests. I am not a professional and no animals were harmed in the making of this reclist.Current Music: Some Unholy War

[fandom] hot boys with ink

The theme at rightclicklick is "ink" right now, which is a super hot theme anyway, and right up my alley. In this post, Matt Schultze is featured (he's Vince in The Fast and the Furious - along with many other roles, of course).
Holy hell.
Obviously, I watched TfatF for Vin Diesel (and was introduced to the wonder of Michelle Rodriguez at the same time). Vince was always, you know, attractive, but none of the guys compare to Dominic.
However, when taken on his own, Matt Schultze is amazing. I definitely have a type: big arms, tattoos, wide leather wrist cuffs, smirks. HOT.
Man, do I love hot boys.Current Mood: humina

Tonight, Lek and I started watching Witchblade: The Complete Series. Yay for it finally being on DVD.
But when we popped it in and got past the FBI Warning, there was a PSA about how stealing movies is wrong, illustrated with clips from Casablanca. Complete with intertitles like, "Rick is really bummed..." and "Stealing time with Victor's girlfriend: Good. (After a brief clip of Rick and Ilsa together) Stealing movies? BAD."
It was just so very WTF-inducing. We paid good money to own Witchblade on DVD and Warner Bros. is going to tell us not to steal DVDs? And I really don't think this sort of thing will work on the people who are pirating movies.
(We were very amused when in the pilot episode of Witchblade, Sara goes to a nightclub that has a bunch of TV screens that show random clips from some monster movie. Probably pirated.) |

The subject line is apropos of nothing. I heard this yesterday at the Allentown Fair as we were looking at the cows. I figured it had to be noted somewhere so, yes, you now all know the secret of gray cows. :P
I am reading a fascinating book now entitled Looking for Anne of Green Gables: The Story of Anne of Green Gables and her Literary Classic by Irene Gammel. I found it recommended on my friends of friends page a while ago and it finally came it at the library about a week ago. I have always been interested in Anne's world and especially because L.M. Montgomery herself is so interesting and a sort of an enigma personality. I highly recommend this book and I know many of you would probably like it as well.
I found out from my dad yesterday they had to put down Wyllie. She was 15 or 16 and couldn't even stand up on her own anymore. She was a good dog and we did give her a lot longer life as she would have been killed if we hadn't adopted her from the SPCA. I'm glad she's not in pain anymore and is at rest but it's still v.v. sad and I'll miss knowing she's still alive.
Per Jill's rec I did look at Motel 6 in Asheville for staying at for the wedding and we'll most likely going to stay there. They offer an incredibly reasonable rate for a week's stay there and it looks like it's fairly close to a bunch of things. So, YAY!!! Jess and I already got dresses for the wedding and we're both looking forward to it so much. |

Del Martin just died.
One of those minor personal heroes who I always just enjoyed the presence of in the world.
She looked pretty fragile at her (second) wedding celebration, some 72 days ago, so as I say, not a surprise. But nonetheless a moment in time.
(And I didn't at all know about her work for and with battered women. I just knew about Daughters of Bilitis and her work to get homosexuality off the list of mental disorders, and a few other things. Quite a lady.)
Memorial gifts in her memory, thank you Mactavish, can be sent to the No on 8 campaign. That's the campaign to help defeat the ballot referendum which'd repeal the marriage rights of gay citizens. |

The trouble with watching older shows from the sentai/tokusatsu genre is that they will occaisionally have a contest of some kind at the end of the show, and sometimes it's for really cool stuff.
Usually it's for a CD of the opening and ending themes or toy versions of the mecha seen on the show. But at the end of an episode of Gransazer I just watched, they mentioned that fifty lucky viewers would win photo books featuring either the heroes or heroines. A search on Amazon (U.S. and Japan) turns up neither book, and eBay didn't have them either. (I did find an unused Gransazer coloring book, though.) And well, it would be nice to have a book that has pretty pictures of Go(u) and Tappei, especially since the actors pretty much disappeared after Gransazer. Ah, well.
I got my hands on volume 21 of Eyeshield 21 the other day and ended up reading it all at once. In retrospect, I kinda wish I hadn't, but it was nigh impossible to put down. I loved the little bonus story, where we learn that the Devil Bats' ace member is Cereberus. Also, need volume 22 now! Stupid wait til October...
Skewed Studios has started subbing Abaranger. Of course they do this just as I'm nearing the end of the series with the HK subs. Ah, well. It'll be nice to watch again in a year or two with proper subs and be able to understand more of what's going on.
Hey Immi, TV-Nihon finally released Yu-Gi-Oh episode 25. Now if only they'd work on more Game Center CX...
Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb would be happy to work on the Buffy animated series if it were resurrected.
HBO loses faith in turning Preacher into a series.
Drive-In Horrorshow will have a segment with two Survivor winners, Ethan Zohn and Jenna Morasca. (You might think I included this mostly for fox1013. You're probably right.)
A new in-depth article on Zack & Miri Make A Porno. Minor spoilers, including casting and cameos.
And Jason "Motormouth" Mewes talks about playing a silent psycho in the slasher comedy Silent But Deadly. ...he's playing a psycho. You know, one that befriends goats.Current Mood: geeky

Dear post office,
You were supposed to restart our mail yesterday. Give up the goods.
Dear week,
Please stop sucking.
Dear brain,
Please stop acting like you're hopped up on drugs or something. I would like to pretend to have the attention span of at least a gnat.
Dear freezer,
Please magically have ice cream. |
